 During the battle for Iwo Jima, US Shermans were provided with additional systems for protection against envisaged Japanese attacks. The main opponent was determined infantry, so 5th tank battalion used spikes/nails welded to their hatches in order to prevent infantrymen to climb and open those hatches. Additional sandbags were presumably there to protect the thinner upper side from satchel charges, whereas wooden plates saved accompanying Marines from bullets that would ricochet from metal sides, as in this case the wood absorbed them...
